INSPECTION FOR CRACKS IN THE ELEVATOR CENTRE HINGE
Applicable to the Schneider ES 52 Kookaburra, ES 56 Nymph, ES 57 Kingfisher, Grunau Baby II, III and IV models, all serial numbers. The defect is cracking of the hinge backplate adjacent to the weld. The centre elevator hing failure is caused by excessive bouncing of the elevator during ground handling. Always restrain elevator in the neutral position by looping the safety harness over the control column which prevents bouncing against the stops.
