JAMMING OF AIRBRAKES IN EXTENDED POSITION

Water remaining in airbrake boxes after flight in rain or when tied down in the open has resulted in corrosion at air brake levers on LS sailplanes. This AD is applicable to the LS 6, LS 6-a, LS 6-b, LS 6-c, LS 6-18w and LS 6c-18 sailplanes. Long time corrosion at the bearings may result in excessive play in the mechanism. In one case the airbrakes could not be retracted during approach and landing. Immediately by operator before next flight, check airbrake levers for corrosion at lower ends and check airbrakes for possible jamming during retraction under load. Simultaneously apply about 25kg to the rear of each lever without twisting the member and try retracting the airbrakes. If airbrakes jam or become difficult to operate, make entry in the Maintenance Release “Serious Defect” section and refer to section 2 below. Rolladen Schneider Technical Bulletin No. 6037 edition 14, Sep ’99 forms part of this AD.
