INSPECTION AND MODIFICATION OF THE LOWER RUDDER HINGE
Applicable to all Jantar Models. Over its operating life the Jantar series of gliders have shown a history of problems with the lower rudder hinge despite several changes to the design of the fitting. These problems have resulted in three AD’s (including this one). The problem with the rudder hinge has been highlighted recently with two incidents involving failure of the hinge. In each case only luck prevented a serious accident. Issue 2 was produce to correct an error in Figure 7. This directive contains multiple instructions and modifications due to multiple assorted Defect Reports. At each Annual Inspection the rudder must be removed and the lower rudder hinge inspected for damage. This damage may include broken plywood, cracked metal fittings, crushed timber, delaminated fibreglass etc. Any damage must be repaired before next flight. During the inspection the hinge should be lightly loaded in all directions and the hinge observed for excessive freeplay, noises etc. Any defects identified should be reported using the SOAR SDR reporting system.
